Neurotrauma Research Program

Here in Western Australia, more than 6,000 people are living with the terrible consequences of neurotrauma. This number includes 363 mainly young people who sustained traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries in road crashes during 2004 alone. The enormous human and economic impact of these injuries underscores the vital importance of the Neurotrauma Research Program (NRP) to the Western Australian community.

The NRP supports cutting edge scientific and clinical research aimed at improving long-term functional recovery from injury to the central nervous system. Improved therapeutic interventions will optimise patient recovery, leading to improved independence and quality of life for patients and their families.

Since 1999, NR-funded scientists have discovered many key pieces of the neurotrauma puzzle and some research projects are now ready to be translated from bench to bedside.

In May 2006, the Western Australian Government confirmed its faith in WAIMR and our State's leading neuroscientists and neuro-clinicians, announcing a major funding boost to the NRP, of $8 million over five years.

This wonderful financial support is enabling significant enhancement and expansion of the NRP, bringing the day when medicine can go some way to repairing and regenerating injured brain and spinal cord tissue ever closer.
