Young Maylands scientist Jasmine Singh has taken out an award for her work into neurodevelopmental disorders at a gala dinner to celebrate Medical Research Week 2008.
Ms Singh, who works at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, received the Tri-Med-sponsored award at the Australian Society for Medical Research's annual ceremony at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre last Friday night (June 6).
She was recognised for her presentation to peers and colleagues at a symposium during Medical Research Week.
Ms Singh said it was humbling to be honoured for her research.
"Our team investigates a gene called MECP2 which is linked to a number of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Rett syndrome and autism, that have a profound impact on the lives of those diagnosed with them," she said.
"We're working hard to understand more about the gene in the hope of shedding further light on the causes of these disorders and awards like this remind us of the importance of our quest."
WAIMR Director Peter Klinken said he was thrilled Jasmine's important research, being conducted under the guidance of WAIMR's Professor David Ravine and Dr Alka Saxena, was being acknowledged.
"As scientists, we strive to gather new knowledge that we can use to make real, positive differences to the health of people affected by devastating diseases and Jasmine's work holds hope of doing just that," Professor Klinken said.
ASMR Medical Research Week® was held from June 2 to 8, 2008.
In 2008, WAIMR celebrates 10 years of groundbreaking discoveries.
