A team from WAIMR is leading plans for a large-scale family health study in the City of Joondalup, in Perth's northern suburbs. The proposed Joondalup Family Health Study aims to conduct research into the causes, treatment and prevention of diseases like cancer, heart disease, asthma, obesity and diabetes.

Up to 80,000 adults and children would be studied and all volunteers would supply health information, probably at three-year intervals. The Study would be a contemporary, metropolitan version of the world-renowned Busselton Health Study, which has been ongoing since 1966.

The proposed Joondalup Family Health Study is an initiative of WAIMR, UWA, Edith Cowan University, the Lions Eye Institute, the Women's and Infants Research Foundation, and other academic, government and hospital partners. WAIMR Professor Lyle Palmer will lead the Study.
